Lenoir, Jan. 13. - News has reached here of the death of Caldwell's oldest citizen, Mr. Gilliam Coffey of Upton, who died on Saturday last. He was 99 years and 8 months old, having been born May 22, 1810. Many Lenoir people including your correspondent anticipated visiting the centenarian on his one hundredth birthday. He could see well, hear well and work till the last, and it was fully expected he would pass the century mark. The contemplation of a contemporary of John Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe and all the celebrities since their time is deeply interesting to this writer. The regret is he could not stay the fatal four months longer. The next oldest citizen of the county is probably Mr. Nelson Powell who will be 95 on the 23d inst.
