(Coffey) Sybouts, 90, passed away peacefully in bed at her apartment in the Five Rivers Assisted Living in Tillamook, OR, on October 31, 2011. She was born on February 3, 1921 in Marengo, WA to Davis F. and Rose (Grant) Coffey, the fifth of eight children. The family moved to Outlook, WA in 1930 and Gladys graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1941. After high school, Gladys worked as a phone receptionist for an insurance company in Yakima. She also fought a tough battle with tuberculosis in her early 20ís. She met Lawrence (Larry) Sybouts at the Yakima Ice Arena through her brother, Byron. They were married in Yakima on July 17, 1948. They lived for seven years in Yakima and three years in Grandview, where Gladys worked part-time as a photo-colorer for a photography studio. They then moved to Goldendale and lived there for 50 years, before moving to Tillamook, OR, where their son, Mark resides. Both Gladys and Larry were very active in church. Gladys taught Sunday School and VBS, sang alto in the choir, and did many art/craft projects whenever needed, including painting the stable backdrop for Goldendaleís Nativity Scene and a full mural in a preschool Sunday School room at church. Gladys was always a very generous, creative lady. She rarely spent money on herself, yet always gave all she had to her children and other family and friends. She loved music, art, drama, and literature and took art lessons as an adult. She bought a piano with her very first paycheck and years later, gave it to a family who wanted their children to take piano lessons. Other favorite pastimes were traveling to various national parks after her husbandís retirement, crossword puzzles and Jeopardy, and she even tried her hand at bowling, a passion of her husband, Larry. Family and friends were always amazed at Gladys' stamina to bounce back from many major health issues. She survived colitis, tuberculosis, kidney disease, cancer, heart failure, and other problems as well. Each time, prayer saved her and Gladys and her family gave God the glory for being healed, and now she has entered her permanent healing at home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus. Gladys' wit and sweet spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by daughter: Gayle Talbot of Moses Lake, WA; and grandchildren: Ben (Sara), Naomi (Justin Hanvey), and Daniel; daughter Karen (Brent) Begalka of Renton, WA, and grandchildren Aaron and Brenda and great-granddaughter, Alissa; and son, Mark Sybouts of Tillamook, OR.; one sister, Barbara Swett of Lynnwood, WA, one brother, Robert "Bob" Coffey (Wanda) of Cle Elum; sisters-in-law Lillian Coffey and Bonnie Coffey of Yakima. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Larry; parents, Davis and Rose Coffey; two brothers, Byron Coffey and Ralph Coffey; and three sisters, Vera Morgan, Edith Jauhola, and Helen Hitzler. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. A memorial service will take place on November 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 5640 Highway 101 South, Tillamook, Oregon. Lawrence died in Oregon on 6 November 2008 and was buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR in November 2008 .32472,32475,32476 Obituary, The Yakima Herald-Republic, Yakima, WA, Tue., Nov. 11, 2008 WHEELER, OR - Lawrence (Larry) Sybouts was born on January 8, 1919 in Moxee, WA to Reinder and Petrine (Haugen) Sybouts. Larry went home to be with his Lord on November 6, 2008 in Wheeler, Oregon at the age of 89. Larry grew up in Moxee and attended high school there where he lettered in baseball, basketball and track. After high school he attended Whitman Business College in Yakima 1 1/2 years. He then enlisted in the United States Army serving as a Finance Technical Clerk (headed officers pay section for a division) during World War II in the Third Division in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Austria. After the war, he met Gladys Coffey at the Yakima Ice Arena through her brother, Byron. They were united in marriage in Yakima, WA on July 17, 1948. They lived for seven years in Yakima, WA and three years in Grandview, WA before moving to Goldendale, WA. They lived in Goldendale for over 50 years. Larry was very active in church. He was a 3rd grade Sunday school teacher for about 40 years and served as Church treasurer in various Baptist churches over his lifetime. Larry had a lifelong interest in sports, attending many Goldendale High School games. He began bowling after leaving the Army and earned dozens of bowling trophies. Larry's career was an accountant, or bookkeeper as he called himself, and he retired from Boise Cascade in January 1984. After retiring he and Gladys enjoyed visiting family and traveling to various national parks. Gladys and Larry moved to Tillamook, Oregon in October of 2008. Larry will be dearly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his sister Mabel Lang. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 60 years - Gladys Sybouts of Tillamook, OR; daughters - Gayle Talbot (Steve) of Moses Lake, WA, and Karen Begalka (Brent) of Renton, WA; son - Mark Sybouts of Tillamook, OR; sister - Louise Anderson of Seattle, WA; brother - Henry "Hank" Sybouts (Lois) of Bellingham, WA; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. A memorial service will take place on November 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Tillamook Oregon.
