Mr. Coffey was born in Moringo, Wash., and moved to Outlook in 1930 and then to Yakima in 1940. He worked for the Yakima School District No. 7 for 28 years as a custodian. He then worked eight more years, retiring in 1987. Survivors include his wife, H. Lillian Coffey of Yakima; two sons, Wayne D. Coffey and Dale A. Coffey, both of Yakima; four sisters, Helen Hitzler of Yakima, Gladys Sybouts of Goldendale, Edith Jauhola of Yakima and Barbara Swett of Mountlake Terrace, Wash.; and two brothers, Ralph Coffey of Yakima and Robert Coffey of Cle Elum. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Tahoma Cemetery. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery. Coffey, 85, longtime Yakima resident, passed away peacefully in the family home on Sunday, December 7, 2003. He was born on November 11, 1918, in Marengo, Washington to Davis F. and Rose (Grant) Coffey, the fourth of eight children. The family moved to Outlook, WA. in 1930 and Ralph graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1937. In 1940, he moved with his family to Yakima, where he started the "Big Dollar" service station at what is now First Street and Valley Mall Blvd. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, later transferred to the Air Force from which he was discharged honorably in 1945. In early 1947, he moved to Sunnyside where he opened a real estate and insurance office and met his future wife, Bonnie Neal. They were married on December 20, 1947. After earning a degree in accounting from Yakima Business College, he became the accountant for Yakima Country Club and was later promoted to manager. In 1959, he became manager at Cashway Lumber and Manufacturing. In 1963, Ralph and Bonnie started Yakima Pallet & Bin, operating it successfully until its sale in 1979. At this point, Ralph became the busiest "retired" person in Yakima. Ralph was always involved with his family and community. He enjoyed being a Pee Wee baseball coach and sponsor for many years. He was a faithful servant to his Lord, attending First Baptist Church for many years before joining First Presbyterian Church in 1995, where he has served as an usher and a deacon. He served on the Salvation Army board for more than 30 years, was honored with the "Others" award in 1982, and was presented the "Life Member" award in 2002. He also served on the boards of Sun Tower, Yakima Specialties, Yakima Neighborhood Health Clinic, and the Downtown Rotary Club, where he was a member for 35 years. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Coffey of Yakima; daughter, Donna Buckingham of Mercer Island, Wash.; son, Neal Coffey of Yakima; sisters, Edith Jauhola and Helen Hitzler of Yakima; Gladys Sybouts (Larry) of Goldendale, and Barbara Swett of Seattle; brother, Robert Coffey (Wanda) of Cle Elum; sister-in-law, Lillian Coffey of Yakima; two grandchildren, Melissa Wielde of Mercer Island; and Neal T. Coffey (Patrice) and two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Lauren Coffey of Memphis, Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Davis and Rose Coffey; a sister, Vera Morgan, and a brother, Byron Coffey. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, at First Presbyterian Church, South Eighth and Yakima Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to First Presbyterian Church, Salvation Army, or Union Gospel Mission. (Coffey) Swett passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, September 22, 2013. She was born on April 13, 1929 in Marengo, Washington to Davis F. and Rose A. (Grant) Coffey, the youngest of eight children. Barbara graduated from Yakima High School in 1947. Barbara retired from Western Union in 1984 after working there for over 35 years. She then began a new career working for NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) where she retired in 1994. Barbara loved to travel and visited many different countries in Europe. She especially enjoyed her trip to Australia and New Zealand in 2002 with her long time friend, John Crawford. She also enjoyed square dancing, water aerobics, playing bridge and mahjong. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to her entire family. Barbara is survived by her daughter, Kathy Hastings; son, Karey Swett and daughter-in-law, Lynne; her brother, Robert Coffey and sister-in-law, Wanda; six grandchildren; and three great grand-children. Her son, Kevin Swett preceded her in death in 2011. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, October 5th in the Rhododendron Room at the Edmonds Conference Center at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army. |
