"Jay R. Coffey Passes at Home

"Dr. Jay Russell Coffey, 49, son of the late Dr. Robert C. Coffey, famous surgeon and founder of Coffey Memorial hospital, died suddenly Monday afternoon at his residence and clinic, 811 N. W. 19th avenue, where he had practiced medicine since the last war. Death came while he was apparently in good health.

"Dr. Coffey, who has three of his sons and a brother on active service and was himself a member of the Coast Guard reserve, was born in Moscow, Idaho. He studied at Portland academy and later was graduated from the University of Oregon, where he majored in medicine.

"Mayo Clinic Attended

"Following his graduation he studied at the Mayo clinic, Rochester, Minn., for four years and continued his studies at Johns Hopkins university, Baltimore. He served in the great war at base hospital 46 in France as a sergeant-major. On his return to Portland he was for a time associated with his father in the operation of the Dr. Robert C. Coffee [sic] clinic and hospital, now Coffey Memorial hospital.

"His father, world-famous for his studies in the field of cancer operations, was killed in an airplane crash in Portland on November 9, 1933. The Coffey family first fame to Portland in 1900.

"Widow, 4 Sons Survive

"Dr. Jay Coffey's widow and four sons survive. His first wife died in 1932. On August 1, 1938, Dr. Coffey married Martha Handley of Portland, who survives her husband.

"Dr. Coffey was a member of the American Medical association and the Oregon State Medical Society. He was an active member of the Shrine lodge and of the American Legion. He was particularly fond of boating and was an enthusiastic member of the Portland Yacht Club.

"In addition to his widow he is survived by four sons, Captain Jay Coffey, Jr., U.S.A.A.C., overseas; Lieutenant Thomas Coffey, U.S.M.C., Camp Pendleton, Cal.; Lieutenant John Coffey, U.S.M.C., overseas, and Joel, at home; two brothers, Wilson Bryan Coffey, Portland, and Captain Dr. Robert M. Coffey, U.S. army, overseas.

"Funeral arrangements have not yet been complete."

Dr. Jay Russell Coffey and Josephine Richardson were married circa 1915 in Oregon. Richardson and Adelaide Van Pelt, was born on 3 May 1896 in Texas. She lived with her parents in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR on 20 April 1910. 1st Lt. Thomas Richardson "Tom" Coffey was born on 15 October 1917 in Oregon. Tom died on Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands on 24 June 1944 and was buried at River View Cemetery in Portland, Multnomah Co., OR in 1944 . 1st Lt. 1st Lt. Tom R. Coffey

Graveside funeral services for 1st Lt. Tom Richardson Coffey, U. S. marine corps, whose death occurred July 24, 1944, on Tinian, will be conducted by Rev. T. F. Hudson at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Riverview cemetery.

He was born in Portland October 15, 1917, the son of the late Dr. J. R. Coffey. He is survived by three brothers, Jay and Joel Coffey, Portland, and Capt. John F. Coffey of the U. S. marine corps.

Thomas' military marker identifies him as a First Lt. in the 4th Marine Division during World War II. From Jun. 14, to Jul. 9, 1944 the 4th was in heavy combat operations on the island of Saipan. He was awarded the Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

Marine Hero Gets Award

Family Received Posthumous Medal

Joel Coffey, 15-year-old Lincoln hich school student, Saturday received the silver star medal, posthumously awarded to his hero-brother, 1st Lt. Tom Coffey.

Recognition of the marine officer's gallant death on Tinian island was made Saturday by Maj. Gen. Claude Larkin, retired, who read from the official citation:

"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the 2d battalion, 25th marines, 4th marine division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tinian, Marianas Islands, on July 24, 1944." Lt. Coffey lost his life while placing demolition charges in the battle area, the general said, before members of the marine officer's family who gathered in the marine corps offices in the federal building, Saturday morning.

Lt. Coffey was a grandson of the late Dr. Robert C. Coffey. His brother, Joel, and step-mother, Mrs. J. R. Coffey, live at 2635 S. W. Georgian place. There are two other brothers: J. R. Coffey, Jr., veteran pilot, recently discharged after six years in the army air corps, and 1st Lt. John F. Coffey on active duty with the marines. A grandmother, Mrs. Tom Richardson, lives at 2257 N. W. Irving street. Both parents of Lt. Coffey are dead.

Mrs. Martha Coffey

Requiem Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Cathedral for Mrs. Martha J. Coffey of 3144 SW Fairview Blvd. She died Friday at a local hospital following an extended illness.

Mrs. Coffey was born in Portland Aug. 23, 1895.

She was the widow of Jay R. Coffey whom she married in 1944 [sic].

She was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral parish.

Survivors include a stepson, Joel R. Coffey, Portland; a sister, Mrs. Ruth E. McBride, Portland; three brothers, Stanley J. Handley, Grover F. Handley, and Russell Handley, all of Portland; and a niece, Mrs. Aubrey M. Hill, Ashland.

Interment will be in Riverview [sic] Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Hennessey, Goetsch & McGee.
