James died of pneumonia on 16 January 1931 at the age of 79 in McKinney, Collin Co., TX and was buried at Highland Cemetery in Melissa, Collin Co., TX on 18 January 1931.12791,12792,12793 The following appeared in the Dallas Morning News, Dallas, TX, on Thu., Sep. 22, 1977, Section D, Page 6, and is an extract from the "Family Tree" column presented by Anne Hunt: "A. J. Jernigan, 4012 Fountainhead, Dallas 75233 sent us the account of J. Perry Coffey's death, as printed in the 'McKinney Daily Courier Gazette.' The 24-inch story mentions that Coffey came to a settlement near Anna with 80 people in a caravan from Kentucky. It states that only four of the 80 were still living at that time. Jernigan asked to hear from readers who may know some of the others in the caravan. He writes that some of the families may have been named Portman, Barker, Coffman and Riffe. Perry, who was '79 years, 11months and 28 days old when he died of the flu (which he had been suffering from for a week or ten days)' was the grandfather of A. J. Jernigan. He was married in 1875 to Miss Sally Griffin, served as a county commissioner and was buried on his 80th birthday." James Perry Coffey, son of Jesse P. Coffey, was born in Kentucky on January 18, 1851, and came to Texas with his parents in 1855. He attended school at old Mantua. On December 8, 1875, he married Sallie Griffin. For four years they lived at Anna and then moved to a farm near Westminster, where they lived until 1918, at which time they moved to McKinney. He died there on January 16, 1937. His survivors were his wife and four children, George A. Coffey, Mrs. R. L. Johnsey; Mrs. J. R. Williams, and Mrs. A. W. Jernigan and twelve grandchildren. He was also survived by one brother, Will Coffey, and two sisters, Mrs. F. L. Coffey and Miss Cynthia Coffey. James Perry Coffey served two terms, 1904 to 1908, as county commissioner from the Blue Ridge precinct. James Perry Coffey and Sarah Margaret "Sally" Griffin were married on 7 December 1875 in Collin Co., TX.12794 They12794 appeared in the census on 1 June 1900 in Collin Co., TX.12795 Sarah Margaret "Sally" Griffin, daughter of James Griffin and Margaret King, was born on 1 September 1854 in Georgia. Sarah resided with her parents in Highland, Collin Co., TX on 30 July 1870. Sarah died in Collin Co., TX on 30 January 1943 of senility and was buried at Highland Cemetery in Melissa, Collin Co., TX in February 1943 .12796,12797,12798,12799 Death Report, The Dallas Morning News, Dallas, TX, Sun., Jan. 31, 1943, Sec. I, Page 7 Mrs. Sallee [sic] Coffey Succumbs at 88 Mrs. Sally M. Coffey, 88, for many years active in Collin County and Dallas Baptist Church activities, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R. L. Johnsey, 208 East Woodin, Saturday. Funeral services will be held at the North McKinney Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Monday. The body will be at Mrs. Johnsey's home until Monday. A native of Georgia, she moved to Collin County with her parents shortly after the close the War Between the States. Her husband, the late J. P. Coffey of McKinney, died in 1931. Mrs. Coffey is survived by three daughters, Mr. J. R. Williams of Ardmore, Okla.; Mrs. A. W. Jernigan, Van Alstyne, and Mrs. Johnsey; a son, George A.
