Alice Philyaw Coffey Branch, 78, of Harper Ave., Lenoir, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Caldwell County Hospice.

She was born Dec. 31, 1921, in Caldwell County to the late Lawrence and Martha Bean Philyaw. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lester C. Coffey; three brothers, Clyde, Clell and John Philyaw; two sisters, Ruby Durham and Callie Padgett; and two grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of Green Valley Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Clarence Coffey and Cloyd Coffey, both of Lenoir; five daughters, Mrs. Lawrence (Catherine) Abernathy of Lenoir, Rachel Philyaw, Mrs. James (Mary Ellen) Philyaw and Mrs. Barry (Linda) Triplett, all of Collettsville, and Mrs. Raymond (Etta Mae) Hamby of ....

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Henry Abernathy; one brother, Clarence Coffey; and three sisters, Mary Ellen Philyaw, Rachael Philyaw and Etta Mae Hamby. Mrs. Abernathy had worked as a CNA. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Raby of Lenoir and Margie McNeil and husband Todd of Wilkesboro; one brother, Cloyd Coffey of Granite Falls; one sister, Linda Triplett and husband Barry of Lenoir; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
