Four Are Killed As Plane Dives in Carolina

Cabin Monoplane's Motor Failes, Report; Prominent Wilkesboro Man Dies

North Wilkesboro, N.C., Sept. 9 (AP)--Four persons were instantly killed late today when an airplane crashed near Clingman, fifteen miles east of here.

The dead:

Carl S. Coffey, 36, pilot-owner of the place.

Murph Mathis, 43, a farmer,Route 2, Roaring River.

Robert Green, 27, Clingman merchant.

Lester Boyd, 26, a mechanic, Yadkinville

The bodies of the pilot and his three passengers were mangled almost beyond recognition. The place was demolished.

Four Are Killed When Carolina Plane Crashes

North Wilkesboro, N.C., Sep. 9, - Four persons were killed late today when a airplace crashed near Clingman, 15 miles east of here.

The dead: Carl S. Coffey, 26, pilot-owner of the plane; Murph Mathis, 43, a farmer, route 2, Roaring River; Robert Green, 27, Clingman merchant, and Lester Boyd, 26, a mechanic, Yadkinville.

The plane, a four-passenger Stinson cabin monoplane, purchased by Coffey three years ago, crashed on a farm, a few hundred yards from the home of Greene, one of the passengers.

Carl Sylvester Coffey and Margaret Tate Gwyn were married circa 1925 in North Carolina. They appeared in the census on 4 April 1930 in Wilkes Co., NC.¹⁸²⁰⁴ Margaret Tate Gwyn was born on 15 June 1899 in North Carolina. Margaret died on 18 May 1988 at the age of 88 in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., NC and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in North Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., NC.¹⁸²⁰⁵

Carl Sylvester Coffey and Margaret Tate Gwyn had the following children:
