Senior Class President Is Accidently [sic] Killed

Blowing Rock, June 18.--Edward Coffey, 18, president of the 1935 graduating class of Blowing Rock high school, was accidentally killed today by a gun in the hands of 15-year-old Devere Hollars, his first cousin.

The accident occurred early this morning after Devere had spent the night at the Coffey home. Edward laid down a rifle belonging to his brother, and Devere picked it up to place it in a corner. As he did, the gun went off. The bullet hit Edward over the right eye. He died within 20 minutes.

Young Hollars, son of Mrs. Frank Simmons, was prostrated with grief tonight.

Coffey is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus M. Coffey; two sisters, Miss Mabel Coffey and Mrs. Helen Banner; two brothers, Howard and Ronda. Funeral services probably will be held Sunday afternoon.

No inquest is planned.
