Elmer Coffey, 46, Taken by Death - D. T. & I. Official Dies Suddenly at Springfield, Funeral Here Today

Elmer Coffey, aged 46 years, died suddenly Monday at Springfield, O. Mr. Coffey who was director of safety and sociology of the Detroit, Toledo & Ironton railway, was enroute to Philadelphia, after spending the week end with his family here. Mrs. Coffey and son Jack, went to Springfield immediately and returned Tuesday with the body which was taken to the home on West Logan street.

Mr. Coffey was born in Waverly, O., and was married May 13, 1902 to Miss Grace Ellis of Dundee. The family have lived here about three years.

Survivors are the widow and eleven children, Mrs. Vera Bobel of Tontogany, O., Mrs. Thelma Groening of Detroit, Elmer Jr., of Cleveland, O, Mrs. Vivian Liddle of Detroit, Mrs. Winona Price of Monroe, Jack, Robert, Betty, Mariella, Charles and Lee at home, also his father, Jerry Coffey, of Lima, O., who is spending the winter here, two brothers, Grover and Patrict of Lima, two sisters, Mrs. Edith Hartman of Creston, O., and Mrs. Hazel Spurlock of Lima.

Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Presbyterian church, Rev. Bertram L. Davies officiating. Burial will be made in Brookside.

Elmer J. Coffey and Grace Ellis were married on 13 May 1902 in Michigan. They appeared in the census on 24 April 1910 in Vernon Twp., Shiawassee Co., MI.²⁹³⁸⁴ They²⁹³⁸⁴ appeared in the census on 14 January 1920 in Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.²⁹³⁸⁵ Grace Ellis was born on 12 February 1886 in Monroe Co., MI. She lived with her paternal grandparents Benjamin and Ella Ellis in Milan, Monroe Co., MI on 15 June 1900. She appeared in the census on 3 April 1930 in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI.²⁹³⁸⁶ Grace appeared in the census on 12 April 1940 in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI.²⁹³⁸⁷ Grace died on 30 September 1961 at the age of 75 at Herrick Memorial Hospital in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI and was buried at Brookside Cemetery in Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI.²⁹³⁸⁸

Mrs. Grace Coffey - Services were held Wednesday at the Collins Corkery Funeral Home for Mrs. Grace Coffey, 75, who died about 6 p.m. at the Herrick Memorial Hospital, where she had been admitted about 12 hours earlier. Mrs. Coffey was born Feb. 12, 1886 in Cone. Her husband, Elmer, died in 1929. She was a member of the Auxiliary Units of the Hall-Slater VFW and the American Legion, the Tecumseh Garden Club and the Pythian sisters. She is survived by five sons, Elmer Coffey of Cleveland Heights, Lt. Comm. Charles Coffey in Tokyo, Jack Coffey of Dearborn, Lee Coffey of Adrian and Jerry Coffey, owners of Jerry's Market, and six daughters, Mrs. Fred White of Toledo, Mrs. Herbert Groening of Grosse Pointe Farms, Mrs. George Liddell of Skokie, Ill., Mrs. Carl Price of Monroe, Mrs. Earl Spangler of Northville and Mrs. Emil Lockwood of St. Louis, Mich. Twenty-four grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren also survive. A son, Robert, died in 1952. The Rev. Allen Wittrup officiated and burial was in Brookside cemetery.
